# Power banks for laptops: what actually works

**Three things have to line up: the laptop charges over USB-C, the bank supports Power Delivery, and it puts out enough watts.** A listing usually advertises only the capacity, which is the least important of the four numbers involved.

[Apple’s own wording](https://support.apple.com/en-us/109509) is the clearest statement of the principle: if your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge it with any USB-C power adapter that supports USB Power Delivery. A power bank is just an adapter with a battery behind it, so the same rule applies.

## Watts first, capacity second

Capacity decides how long it lasts. Wattage decides whether it works at all.

The most useful published figures are Apple’s recommended adapters, because they tell you the band your machine is built around. Match or beat the one for your model:

Apple’s guidance is to use something that provides at least the minimum wattage recommended for your Mac, and it also says you can charge with an adapter that provides higher or lower wattage than the recommended one. It does not spell out what a lower-wattage source costs you in practice, so we are not going to put a number on it either. The safe reading: meet the recommended figure and you are in the territory the machine was designed for.

Not on a Mac? The same method works. Look at the wattage printed on the charger that came with your laptop. Apple’s trick for finding it applies generally: the number is on the adapter’s certification label.

## Why the capacity tops out where it does

You may have noticed that laptop power banks cluster around 20,000mAh and stop. That is not a technical ceiling, it is an aviation one: the limit is 100 watt-hours per battery, which works out at roughly 27,000mAh at typical cell voltage. Manufacturers build to just under it so the thing can be flown with.

If you want the rules themselves, including how many you may carry and what happens when your bag is gate-checked, that is [can you bring a power bank on a plane](https://oohunt.com/blog/power-bank-on-a-plane). To convert a given mAh figure into watt-hours, the [mAh to Wh calculator](https://oohunt.com/tools/mah-to-wh) does it.

One thing we are deliberately not doing is telling you how many times a given bank will refill your laptop. That needs your laptop’s battery capacity in watt-hours, which manufacturers do not publish consistently, and a conversion efficiency nobody publishes at all. Any site quoting you “charges a MacBook twice” has made some of that up.

## The cable is part of the chain

A bank rated at 100W connected with a cable built for 60W gives you 60W at best. This was a big enough problem that [USB-IF](https://www.usb.org/usb-charger-pd) introduced certified cable logos showing support for **60W or 240W**.

For scale: Power Delivery was limited to 100W using 20V with cables rated at 5A, and PD 3.1 raised the ceiling to 240W by adding 28V, 36V and 48V steps. A laptop sits inside that range, which is precisely why the cable can be the bottleneck for a laptop when it never is for a phone. More on that in [why charging is slower than it should be](https://oohunt.com/blog/why-is-my-phone-charging-slowly).

Most laptop-class banks ship with a cable rated for their own output. Use that one, and keep it with the bank.

## What to check on the listing

- **A watt figure on a USB-C port**, not just a total across all ports. A "100W" bank with four ports may give far less from any one of them.
- **The words Power Delivery or PD.** Quick Charge is a different thing and will not drive a laptop.
- **Capacity under about 27,000mAh** if it will ever fly with you.
- **Pass-through charging**, if you want to charge the bank and the laptop from one wall socket overnight.

## One expectation to set

A power bank will usually charge a laptop more slowly than the wall, and slower still if you are working while it charges, because the machine is drawing and storing at the same time. Apple’s own [fast-charge figure](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102378) is 50 percent in around 30 minutes, and that is from its highest-wattage adapters plugged into a wall, not from a battery in your bag.

## Common questions

### Can a power bank charge a laptop?

If the laptop charges over USB-C and the bank supports USB Power Delivery, yes. Apple's wording is that you can charge a Mac laptop with any USB-C power adapter that supports USB PD. A plain USB-A socket on an old bank will not do it.

### How many watts do I need to charge a laptop?

Match your laptop's recommended adapter. Apple lists 30W to 70W for MacBook Air models from 2022, 67W to 96W for the 14-inch MacBook Pro, and 140W for the 16-inch. Its advice is to provide at least the minimum wattage recommended for your Mac.

### What happens if the power bank is lower wattage than my charger?

Apple says you can charge with an adapter that provides higher or lower wattage than the one recommended, and asks for at least the recommended minimum for the best charging experience. It does not state what a lower one costs you, so neither will we.

### How big a power bank can I take on a plane?

The airline limit is 100 watt-hours per battery, which in practice caps power banks at around the 27,000mAh mark. That is the reason you cannot buy an enormous one for travel, and the rules are covered in our power bank flying guide.

### Does the cable matter?

Yes. Certified USB-C cables carry a power rating logo showing support for 60W or 240W, so a cable built for the lower tier caps what reaches the laptop regardless of the bank. Many banks ship with a cable rated for the bank's own output.

### Is mAh the number to shop on?

It is the number on the box and the least useful one. mAh says nothing about how fast the bank can deliver power, which is the part that decides whether a laptop charges. Check the watt figure on the USB-C port first, then capacity.
