**The Brita Standard pitcher filter is not certified to reduce lead. The Elite filter and the faucet filter are.** That is the single most useful fact about this product line, it is published by Brita itself, and almost nothing written about Brita filters mentions it.

Everything below comes from Brita’s performance data sheets, which are the certification documents rather than the marketing. Each filter has its own, and they do not list the same substances.

## What each filter is certified for

Two ranges appear where Brita tested at two acidity levels, pH 6.5 and pH 8.5, because metals behave differently in soft and hard water. “Not listed” means the substance does not appear on that filter’s sheet. It does not mean the filter was tested and failed; it means Brita has not certified it for that, so neither we nor you have any figure to go on.

## The lead answer, in full

The [Elite sheet](https://www.brita.com/support/performance-data/brita-elite/) reports lead reduction of 99.5% at pH 6.5 and 99.6% at pH 8.5, tested by challenging the filter with 150 parts per billion against a 5 ppb permissible limit. Brita says that figure is certified by IAPMO R&T, NSF International and WQA.

The [faucet system](https://www.brita.com/support/performance-data/brita-faucet/) reports 99.9% at both acidity levels from the same challenge.

The [Standard sheet](https://www.brita.com/support/performance-data/brita-standard/) has no lead row. Its NSF/ANSI 53 section lists cadmium, copper and mercury, and that is all. Brita describes it as certified by WQA against Standards 42 and 53 for the contaminants specified on the sheet, and lead is not among them.

## Elite is not simply a better Standard

It is better at nearly everything, and it covers far more, but there is one thing the Standard filter lists and the Elite filter does not: **copper**, at 89% and 73% across the two acidity levels. Zinc is the same story.

That is worth knowing if copper is specifically what you are filtering for, which usually means copper plumbing. For everyone else the Elite covers more ground, lasts three times as long, and is the one tested for lead.

## So, pitcher or faucet?

On certified coverage alone the faucet filter wins. It has the highest lead and chlorine figures of the three, and it carries a long list of volatile organic compounds, including pesticides and solvents, all certified at 99.8% through surrogate testing. No pitcher filter Brita makes has that list.

The trade-offs are practical rather than chemical:

- **It only fits some faucets.**Brita’s faucet mount is for standard faucets, and will not fit a pull-out or spray head.
- **It runs out sooner.**100 gallons against the Elite’s 120, and Brita says filter life should not exceed 100 gallons.
- **There is no waiting.** No reservoir to refill, which is the one thing people actually give up on with pitchers.
- **A pitcher goes in the fridge.** A faucet filter gives you filtered water at tap temperature.

If you want the honest summary: buy the faucet mount if it fits your tap and you will actually change it, and the Elite pitcher otherwise. The Standard filter is for people whose reason for filtering is that their water tastes of chlorine.

## Three things Brita says that are easy to miss

- **None of these purify water.** Every sheet says the filter is not intended to purify water and must not be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality. These are not a treatment for contaminated supply.
- **Test before you buy.**Brita’s own notice at the top of each sheet recommends having your water supply tested to determine your actual treatment needs before buying a unit. Your local [Consumer Confidence Report](https://www.epa.gov/ccr) is the free starting point.
- **Elite filters contain silver.**Brita states the Elite media contains silver to support filter hygiene, that a small amount may transfer to the water, and that the amount is well below the World Health Organization’s recommended maximum.

One more from the fine print on all three: lab results are lab results. Brita notes that actual performance may vary with local water conditions, and that the substances a filter reduces are not necessarily present in everyone’s water.

## Common questions

### Do Brita filters remove lead?

Some of them. The Brita Elite pitcher filter and the Brita faucet filter are both certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction, at 99.5% and 99.9% in Brita's own testing. The Standard pitcher filter is not: its performance data sheet has no lead row at all.

### What does a Brita Standard filter remove?

By Brita's data sheet, chlorine at 95% and zinc at 64% under NSF/ANSI 42, and cadmium, copper and mercury under NSF/ANSI 53. That is the whole certified list. It is a taste-and-odor filter with three metals attached, not a lead filter.

### Is the Brita Elite filter worth the extra money?

It is certified for a great deal more: lead, asbestos, several pesticides and solvents, and microplastics down to half a micron. It also lasts 120 gallons against the Standard's 40. If lead is your reason for filtering, it is the pitcher filter that is tested for it.

### Is a Brita faucet filter better than a pitcher?

For certified coverage, the faucet filter is the broadest of the three: 99.9% lead, 99% chlorine and a long list of volatile organic compounds. It also runs out faster, at 100 gallons against the Elite's 120, and it only fits standard faucets.

### Do Brita filters remove microplastics?

The Elite filter is certified under NSF/ANSI 401 for microplastic particles between 0.5 and 1 micron, at 99.6%. The Standard filter's sheet makes no microplastics claim.

### Do Brita filters remove bacteria?

No, and Brita says so directly. Every one of its data sheets states the filter is not intended to purify water and should not be used with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality.
