How to descale a Keurig, step by step
Keurig says descale every 3 months. The procedure from Keurig's own guides: what you need, the three steps, and what the descale light actually means.

Pour a bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution into an empty reservoir, run brews with no pod until the water runs out, let it stand, then rinse with fresh water until the taste of it is gone. That is the whole procedure, and Keurig says to do it every 3 months. The details below are from Keurig’s own Use and Care guides, because the model-to-model differences are where people get stuck.
What you need
- A bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution.
- A large ceramic mug. Keurig’s guides say this twice and add “Do not use a paper cup”, because the liquid comes out hot and the cycle repeats.
- Fresh water, and a sink to pour into.
- 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the model. Most of that is waiting rather than working.
Two things to do before you start: take the water filter out of the reservoir and set it aside, and check there is no K-Cup pod in the holder. Every cycle here runs dry on purpose.
Step 1: the descaling solution rinse
Empty the reservoir. Pour in the entire bottle of descaling solution, then fill the empty bottle with water and pour that in too. Put the large mug on the drip tray.
Now run brews at the largest size, with no pod, pouring each one into the sink, until the brewer tells you the reservoir is empty. On a K-Slim that means entering Descale Mode first: with the brewer powered off, hold the 8oz and 12oz buttons together for 3 seconds until the descale light is solid. On a K-Elite there is no mode to enter; you just keep running the largest rinsing brew.
Foam is normal. Keurig describes it as the solution reacting with the scale inside, which is the part doing the work.
Step 2: let it stand
On a K-Elite, Keurig says to let the brewer stand for at least 30 minutes, still switched on, after the solution has run through. This is the step people skip, and it is the step that gives the solution time to dissolve what the rinse could not. Then discard anything left in the reservoir and rinse it.
Step 3: the fresh water rinse
Fill the reservoir to the MAX line with fresh water and run rinsing brews at the largest size, no pod, emptying the mug each time. On a K-Elite, Keurig asks for at least 12 rinsing brews, and warns you will probably need to refill the reservoir partway through. On a K-Slim you repeat until the add-water light comes on, twice over.
Twelve sounds excessive until the first coffee afterwards tastes faintly of descaler. When the rinsing is done, put the water filter back in.
The differences by model
| Brewer | Starting the cycle | Keurig’s time |
|---|---|---|
| K-Slim, K-Express and similar | Powered off, hold 8oz and 12oz together for 3 seconds | 15 to 20 minutes |
| K-Elite and other classic reservoirs | No descale mode: run rinsing brews at the largest size | About 45 minutes |
| K-Duo and K-Duo Essentials | Follow the flashing BREW button through the cycles | About 20 minutes |
If your model is not here, the sequence is still solution, stand, rinse. What changes is the button combination, which is printed in your own guide: K-Slim and K-Elite are the two this article worked from.
How often, and why the light is not a calendar
Keurig’s K-Slim and K-Duo guides both say every 3 months. The K-Elite guide says 3 to 6. The difference is not worth agonizing over: what actually sets the interval is your water, and all three guides say calcium deposits build faster in hard water, so descale more often.
The descale light counts water through the machine rather than days on a calendar, so a household getting through four cups a day will see it sooner than the guide suggests. Treat the light as the instruction and the three months as the reminder.
What if nothing comes out
A badly scaled brewer can fail to fill once the solution is in: little or no output, then the sound of air. Keurig’s own fix is to turn it off and unplug it, discard the solution, rinse the reservoir, refill with plain water and run the fresh water rinse. If it still will not pull water, leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes before trying again.
What descaling does not do
It cleans the inside of the plumbing, not the parts you can see. The needles, the pod holder, the drip tray and the reservoir are a separate job, and Keurig puts rinse pods on a weekly cycle and water filters on a two-month one, against the descaler’s three months. If you want the reasoning behind the word itself, see what “descale” actually means on a Keurig.
What to keep on the shelf
Three months comes round quickly, and the job stalls without the solution in the cupboard. Prices change often, so check the current one on Amazon.

Common questions
How often should you descale a Keurig?
Every 3 months, according to Keurig's K-Slim and K-Duo guides, or when the descale light comes on. The K-Elite guide says every 3 to 6 months. Hard water means more often, because scale builds faster.
How long does descaling a Keurig take?
Keurig allows 15 to 20 minutes for a K-Slim and about 45 minutes for a K-Elite, which includes standing for 30 minutes with the brewer still on. Most of it is waiting.
Do you remove the water filter before descaling?
Yes. Keurig's guides say to take the water filter out and set it aside before you start, then put it back when the rinsing is finished.
Why is my Keurig foaming while descaling?
Keurig says the foam is natural: it is the solution reacting with the scale inside the brewer. It stops once the fresh water rinses begin.
Can you use a Keurig while the descale light is on?
The brewer will usually keep working, but the light means scale has built up enough to affect it, and the K-Duo guide ties that to low coffee volume and slower brewing. Descaling is the fix; the light is not a fault.
What if no water comes out during descaling?
Keurig says a heavily scaled brewer may not fill properly, giving little or no output and the sound of air. Turn it off, unplug it, discard the solution, rinse the reservoir, refill with water and run the fresh water rinse again. If it persists, leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes first.
