Charging stations for multiple devices: what the total wattage really means
A six-port charging station rarely gives six devices full speed. How power is shared, what to check before buying, and the stations currently clearing our checks.

The wattage on the box is the total across every port, not what each port delivers. A “100W 6-port” charging station has 100W to share among six devices, and it splits unevenly.
So the number that decides whether a station works for you is not the headline figure. It is what each port gives when everything you own is plugged in at once — and that is the figure most listings decline to publish.
Add up what you actually charge together
Not what you own — what is plugged in at the same time, usually overnight. A phone asks for 20 to 30W, a tablet about 30W, a 13-inch laptop 65W, a 16-inch laptop 100W. Earbuds and a watch are a rounding error at 5W each.
A laptop, a phone and a tablet charging together is realistically 130W. On a 100W station they will all charge, and all three will be slow. That may be fine overnight and useless before you leave the house, which is the actual question to ask.
How the split usually goes
The unhelpful pattern is a station that assigns fixed shares. Plug one device into a 100W four-port unit and you might get 65W, because that port is capped at 65W whether the others are in use or not. The remaining 35W sits idle.
Dynamic power allocation is the feature that fixes this: the station re-divides its output as devices come and go, so a single laptop can take most of the budget and give it back when a phone joins. It is worth paying for and it is worth checking for by name, because the listings that have it say so.
Ports are not interchangeable
A station advertising six ports frequently means four USB-C and two USB-A, and the USB-A ports are the slow ones — they cannot do Power Delivery at all and typically cap around 12W. Counting ports rather than reading them is how people end up with a station that has two useful sockets.
Check which specific port carries the highest output too. On most multi-port stations one port is the fast one and it is usually marked. If your laptop is not in it, it is not getting 100W.
Built-in cables
Stations with cables attached look tidier and they are the ones that die first. A cable flexes thousands of times where it meets the housing, and when it eventually fails it takes a working station with it, because there is nothing to replace.
Bare ports and your own cables cost a little more and outlive the alternative. The exception is a station built around a specific device — a watch dock, say — where the connector is the product.
Desk, bedside, or travel
These are three different objects and the listings blur them. A desk station wants many ports and high total wattage and can be large, because it never moves. A bedside station wants two or three ports and a small footprint. A travel station wants folding pins, a single plug and enough output for a laptop.
Buying a desk station for a suitcase is the common mistake — the wattage is right and the thing is the size of a paperback with a fixed plug that will not fit a hotel socket.

Look for a per-port breakdown in the specification. A listing that publishes what each port delivers when all are in use is telling you something; one that only repeats the total is usually telling you something too.
