How often should you descale a Keurig?
Every 3 months in Keurig's own guides, 3 to 6 for a K-Elite, and sooner in hard water. How to find your water hardness and set an interval that fits it.

Every 3 months, according to Keurig’s K-Slim and K-Duo guides, or whenever the descale light comes on. The K-Elite guide says every 3 to 6. All of them add the same caveat, which matters more than the number: calcium builds faster in hard water, so descale more often.
So the real answer depends on your water and how much coffee you drink, and both are things you can find out.
Why Keurig’s own guides disagree
Three months for a K-Slim and a K-Duo, three to six for a K-Elite. The brewers are not that different; the spread is Keurig covering the range between a soft-water household making two cups a day and a hard-water one making ten. Rather than averaging them, take three months as the default and move from there.
The descale light is the better signal
Where a brewer has one, the reminder counts the liquid that has passed through the machine rather than the days since you last descaled. That makes it self-adjusting: a heavy-use kitchen reaches it faster, which is exactly right, because scale accumulates per litre and not per week. The K-Duo guide also names the symptoms worth treating as the same signal: low coffee volume and slower performance.
Finding your water hardness
Two ways, one free. If you are on a public supply, your utility publishes an annual water quality report, and in the US community systems must deliver one to customers by July 1 each year. Hardness is usually listed in milligrams per litre, sometimes as grains per gallon, where one grain is about 17 mg/L. If you are on a well, or the report is buried, a test strip takes a minute.
The USGS classification is the standard scale, repeated here from the Maryland Geological Survey, and the right-hand column is this site’s reading of Keurig’s three months plus its hard-water sentence, not a Keurig schedule:
| Water | USGS range | A sensible interval |
|---|---|---|
| Soft | 0 to 60 mg/L | Every 4 to 6 months, or when the light comes on |
| Moderately hard | 61 to 120 mg/L | Every 3 to 4 months |
| Hard | 121 to 180 mg/L | Every 3 months |
| Very hard | Over 180 mg/L | Every 2 to 3 months, and expect the light sooner |
How much you drink changes it too
Scale arrives with the water, so ten cups a day scales a brewer roughly five times faster than two. If your household is at the heavy end, treat the shorter end of every range above as yours, and let the light decide if your model has one.
The other two intervals
Descaling is the quarterly job, and Keurig’s maintenance table has two more lines that are easy to forget:
- Rinse pods, weekly. For flavor carryover, especially after sweetened pods.
- Water filter cartridge, every 2 months. It catches some minerals before they reach the heating element, which is the one maintenance job that slows scale down rather than removing it afterwards.
A filter is not a substitute. Keurig asks for descaling on the same schedule whether or not one is fitted.
Can you descale too often?
You can waste solution. Descaling a lightly scaled brewer does no harm that any Keurig document describes, but it costs a bottle and a dozen rinsing brews each time, so matching the interval to your water beats descaling monthly out of anxiety.
What this needs on the shelf
At three months, that is four bottles a year and six filters. Prices change often, so check the current one on Amazon.

Common questions
How often should you descale a Keurig?
Every 3 months, according to Keurig's K-Slim and K-Duo guides, or when the descale light comes on. The K-Elite guide says every 3 to 6 months. In hard water, Keurig says deposits build faster and you should descale more often.
Why does Keurig say 3 months on one model and 3 to 6 on another?
Because the real variable is not the brewer, it is the water and how much of it you run through. Keurig's guides all add that calcium builds faster with higher mineral content, which is the sentence that matters more than the number.
Should I wait for the descale light?
The light is a reasonable prompt: it counts the liquid that has passed through the brewer rather than the days on a calendar, so it adjusts to how much you drink. Three months is the reminder for machines that do not have one.
How do I know if I have hard water?
Your water utility publishes an annual water quality report, which US community systems must deliver to customers by July 1 each year, and hardness is usually in it. A test strip answers it in a minute if you are on a well or cannot find the report.
Does a water filter mean descaling less often?
It helps rather than replaces. A filter cartridge removes some of what would otherwise become scale, which is part of why Keurig puts filters on a 2-month cycle, but the guides still ask for descaling on the same schedule.
What happens if you descale too often?
Nothing useful. Descaling more often than the scale builds costs solution and rinse water without improving anything, which is the argument for matching the interval to your water rather than descaling monthly out of worry.
The procedure itself is in how to descale a Keurig, and whether vinegar can stand in for the solution is in can you descale a Keurig with vinegar. Water filters elsewhere in the kitchen follow the same logic: how often to change a Brita filter.
