Most of what stops a Keurig is a needle, the reservoir, or scale, and Keurig’s own troubleshooting pages check them in that order. This page follows that order, with nothing added: no compressed air, no undocumented button resets, and none of the folk fixes that fill this search. What is here is what Keurig writes in the guides it ships.

It will not brew

The handle. With a pod in the holder, the handle has to be pushed down securely. A pod sitting slightly proud keeps it from latching, and the brewer simply does nothing.

The add water light. Fill the reservoir to the MAX FILL line and not past it, then make sure the tank is seated properly in its base. A reservoir that is full but not seated reads as empty.

If the light stays on anyway, stop.Keurig’s guides say to contact customer service at that point, and the same goes for all the buttons blinking together. Those two are the brewer reporting something you cannot reach from outside.

It brews half a cup

The most common complaint, and Keurig gives three causes in order.

  1. A clogged exit needle. Inside the bottom of the pod holder. A straightened paper clip clears it; the full method is in how to clean a Keurig.
  2. The reservoir came off mid-brew. If the tank was lifted while brewing, reseat it and run a rinsing brew with no pod to get the pump primed again.
  3. Scale. Descale it properly, by the procedure for your model.

Keurig draws a clear line at the end of that list: if you have descaled twice and it still brews a partial cup, contact support. On a K-Mini there is one extra step worth trying first: press POWER, hold BREW for 5 seconds until all the water has dispensed, discard it, then press POWER to restart.

There are grounds in the coffee

Grounds gather in the two needles, and Keurig’s remedy for both is a straightened paper clip: into the exit needle at the bottom of the pod holder, and into every hole of the entrance needle under the lid. Finish with two water-only brews.

On a carafe model there is a second cause that has nothing to do with needles: too much coffee. Keurig puts the maximum at 15 tablespoons of regular grounds and 12 for decaf, and says more than that may overflow.

It is slow, or the cup is short

These are the two symptoms Keurig itself attaches to descaling, in the same sentence as the descale light. A brewer that takes longer than it used to, or gives you less than the size you pressed, is describing scale rather than a fault. Run the cycle in how to descale a Keurig before concluding anything worse.

No power, or it keeps switching off

Check the power button, then the electricity. Keurig asks for the brewer to be plugged into its own grounded outlet, and says that an electric circuit overloaded with other appliances may stop it working properly, which is why it should run on its own circuit rather than sharing with a toaster.

If it switches off by itself after a while, that is usually the energy-saving auto-off rather than a fault. On a K-Elite the guide puts it at 2 hours after the last brew.

It has been sitting unused

Before anything else, rinse the reservoir with fresh water and run rinsing brews with no pod. The K-Mini guide also says to descale a brewer that has been in storage before using it. Water that has stood in a tank for months is its own problem, separate from whatever you were about to diagnose.

When to stop

Keurig’s guides are blunt that a brewer is not user serviceable beyond the cleaning and maintenance procedures they describe. Three specific signals mean the end of self-help: the add water light staying on after a refill, every button blinking at once, and a partial cup that survives two complete descales. Brewers carry a one-year limited warranty from the date of purchase, so a brewer still inside that window is worth a call rather than a screwdriver.

Common questions

Why is my Keurig not brewing?

Keurig's order is: make sure the handle is pushed down securely, then check the add water light and fill to the MAX line with the reservoir seated properly. If the add water light stays on after refilling, or every button blinks at once, their guides say to contact support rather than keep trying.

Why is my Keurig only brewing half a cup?

Usually a clogged exit needle, which a straightened paper clip clears, or a reservoir that was lifted mid-brew, which needs reseating and a rinsing brew with no pod. Otherwise it needs descaling. Keurig says that if two full descales do not fix it, call support.

Why are there grounds in my coffee?

Grounds collect in the exit and entrance needles. Keurig's fix for both is a straightened paper clip, followed by two water-only brews. On carafe models, overfilling also causes it: the maximum is 15 tablespoons of regular grounds, or 12 for decaf.

Why does my Keurig have no power or keep shutting off?

Check the power button first, then the outlet: Keurig says to plug the brewer into its own grounded outlet and run it on its own circuit, because an overloaded circuit can stop it working. Many models also switch themselves off a couple of hours after the last brew by design.

Will descaling fix a Keurig that brews slowly?

Often, yes. Low coffee volume and slower performance are the two symptoms Keurig itself names as descaling symptoms, which is why a descale is worth doing before assuming the brewer is failing.

When should you stop troubleshooting and contact Keurig?

Their guides name three points: the add water light staying on after a refill, all the buttons blinking at once, and a partial cup that survives two complete descales. Beyond the cleaning and maintenance procedures, the guides say a brewer is not user serviceable.
